Commission on Accountability and Policy for Religious Organizations

The Commission on Accountability and Policy for Religious Organizations (“the Commission”) is charged with the following responsibilities:

  1. Assess and evaluate communications from Senator Grassley’s office concerning issues related to accountability and policy for religious organizations.

  2. Assess the position of the Treasury Department (with specific emphasis on the IRS) regarding the Senator’s communications and the related issues.

  3. Identify the key issues and principles for which the Commission will seek input from the religious sector, including but not necessarily limited to:

    • positions related to the facts, perceptions, and premises in the Senator’s communications,

    • positions related to other legislative issues affecting the nonprofit religious sector that require attention,

    • positions as to whether action of some type is needed in response to the identified issues, and

    • positions as to whether action needed is legislation or other action.

  4. Develop and implement a strategy for obtaining input on the key issues and principles from organizations in the nonprofit religious sector.

  5. Gather and analyze the input received.

  6. Draft a report to Senator Grassley regarding the input received and related issues.

  7. Submit the report to Senator Grassley and release it publicly.
